BRIEF ON THE SAILING CLUB

The Navy Sailing Club is the first indigenous yachting Club in Nigeria. It was founded in October 1985. The then Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral AA Aikhomu (Rtd) gave approval for the foundation of the Club while Vice Admiral MAH Nyako (Rtd) who was Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command provided the initial logistic support for the Club to stabilize.

On 7 August, 1986, the Club was formally launched. Active sailing started at the Club in February 1987 while the bar commenced services in March the same year. The commissioning was on Saturday 9 May 1987.

The Club started with two wooden boats which were donated by the Lagos Yacht Club and Westland Helicopter. The Club now has boats made up of GP 14s and Lasers after new ones were purchased by the Nigerian Navy. A reasonable number of Kayaks are also in the Club’s inventory.

The Club’s main objective is to develop sailing culture and sea faring skills amongst members. Membership is open to interested individuals from all works of life.
